Flash 17 (October 1st 2015)

Lots of emails to support this morning…. 😐

Two events causing problems:
  • Last night, Yahoo has changed its Search Engine Protocol. Nothing major, asking info about the country and language used by the requester… Enough, however, to interfere with Yahoo and Google Search (using a common search engine) in the stock panel.
  • Sometimes in the past, not sure when, NSE India also changed its protocol, preventing data to be downloaded.

A corrective will be submitted to Apple tonight…. and released as soon as approved by Apple.

A more philosophical note. I have designed this App based on three basic principles… (1) Chart is king, no bells and whistles, (2) user is the center, must be able to customize everything and (3) nobody wants to pay any kind of monthly fee….
The last point has some drawback…. Yahoo or NSE do not have to ask or inform me of any change they want to make prior to making them… but think of the alternative of a much more expensive App to start with, and every month…

Flash 16 (September 23rd 2015)

The version 1.90 has been released.

The objective of this release is iOS9 compatibility. Initial plan was to release a version combining iOS9 and conversion to SWIFT language… However considering the number of customers having already switched to iOS9, an urgent action was needed.

The next version, 2.0, will be written in SWIFT and will include new features, but won't be released for a few months.

If you like this version of the App, please take a minute to write a review in the App Store. It helps….

Flash 15 (September 15th 2015)

Note: iMastock is not, yet, compatible with iOS9. A compatible version will be released before the end of the year.

Flash 14 (May 5th 2015)

May 15, Quandl will change its web address, using a secure "https" link, rather than the previous "http". If you use Quandl as a provider, you must change the setting. Because, this kind of change is very rare, access to this feature is, on purpose, "non intuitive", to avoid undesirable modifications. Follow the link below for detail explanations on "how to":
Quandl Address Change

Taking advantage of the opportunity to communicate, some news. I am currently in the process of re-writing the three Apps (Mac, iPad, iPhone) using the new Apple language: SWIFT. This is really a huge task, but also a guarantee of long term support.

The Apps will be a lot faster and more stable. There will be new features but the top priority is consistency, between the three type of devices or, for instance the Mac, you'll be able to draw lines and comments on P&F, Kagi… charts, you'll be able to draw Fibos or Pitchforks in intraday, draw parallel, retracement on indicators. Custom indicators will be faster, will include 4 curves. Triggers will accept definition for "buy", "sell", but also "strong buy" or "strong sell", and a lot more…

Mac version is planned for this summer, iPad October and the iPhone end of year.

Flash 13 (January 8th, 2015)

The version 1.70 has been released. This version requires iOS8.

This version includes a significant number of new features:
  • Free Hand Drawing on the chart
  • Fractal Adaptative Moving Average Overlay
  • Triangular Moving Average Overlay
  • McGinley Moving Average Overlay
  • Display values when overing over an overlay curve
  • Correct a bug in pivot points formula

The number of features included in this App might, at times, appear overwhelming to new users. It should not, providing you remember this App is just a tool box. You can open it, use the tools you're comfortable with, and leave the others for later. Imagine a toolbox with 15 screw drivers…. Remember they are just screw drivers with fancy names, adapted to various size and variety of screws…. Same for mobile averages, no need to know everything…. With time depending what kind of market you trade, depending on your time horizon and your appetite for risk, you might look for exactly the right one. All of us, after a while, tend to converge on a few favorite indicators…. Nice to know, however, the next tool you might need is already in the box, just in case…

Finally, please take a minute to write a review in the App Store. About 2.5% of Mastock customers have written one review… 97.5% have not. Apple has changed its policy so the stars do not appear anymore, unless there has been at least five reviews for the last version… at that’s per country. I need your help….

Flash 12 (November 17th, 2014)

Until a new version is released, if you’re following some currencies using Quandl as a provider, you might have to manually edit the code, replacing the prefix “QUANDL” with “CURRFX”.

Message from Quandl on November 17:

Hello,

One of our databases has been renamed.  You may need to update some API calls you make.

Old Database Code: “QUANDL”
New Database Code: “CURRFX”

API Example:  QUANDL/CADUSD is now accessed as CURRFX/CADUSD
Website Example: www.quandl.com/QUANDL/CADUSD has changed to www.quandl.com/CURRFX/CADUSD

Best regards,
The Quandl Team

Flash 10 (September 17th, 2014)

Combined message, the version 2.60 iPad and i.60 iPhone have been released. I was hoping to release the 6.80 version for Mac at the same time but it’s not been approved by Apple yet, a few days away.

The key point for these release is compatibility with iOS8/Yosemite. There are also some common improvements regarding intraday. Lines and Comments can be added on both main chart and indicators. For the Mac version, if you have a screen large enough, see Preferences to have the intraday charts detached, enabling you to keep it open while working on other stocks/periods. Note, for all three versions, horizontal lines are visible on all periods.

The iPhone version is the most improved with many features already implemented for iPad and Mac like multiple averages, update on demand, etc...

However, note upgrading to iOS8 will create a situation where you will no longer be able to synchronize with iOS7/Mavericks devices. I have pasted Apple message below. On the long run, the new iCloud capabilities are really fantastic, I am looking forward implementing features that were not possible before. For the short term however, you’ll have to decide what’s important for you. It also means developer are strongly encouraged to move on and release iOS8/Yosemite only versions as soon as possible. That’s what I plan to do by year end.

Apple Message on iOS8/Yosemite iCloud:
The iCloud infrastructure is more robust and reliable when documents and data are transferred between user devices and the server. When a user installs iOS 8 and logs into the device with an iCloud account, the iCloud server performs a one-time migration of the documents and data in that user’s account. This migration involves copying the documents and data to a new version of the app’s container directory. The new container is accessible only to devices running iOS 8 or OS X v10.10. Devices running older operating systems can continue to access to the original container, but changes made in that container do not appear in the new container and changes made in the new container do not appear in the original container.

Finally, please take a minute to write a review in the App Store. About 2.5% of Mastock customers have written one review… 97.5% have not. Apple has changed its policy so the stars do not appear anymore, unless there has been at least five reviews for the last version… at that’s per country. Obviously, this is not an encouragement to upgrade the App regularly. I might have to slow down the regular improvements, unless you help.

Flash 9 (January 3rd, 2014)

Hopefully, end of the saga, Yahoo has re-established, today, its previous protocol (actually both old and new work).

The version 2.45 for iPad and 1.55 for iPhone have been released, correcting the problem below. A huge thank you to the Apple team for a record time approval. The Mac version is being worked and should be released shortly. Working hard on it...

Sorry for the rapid succession of flash messages. It seems Yahoo has changed their communication protocol. It is easy to fix: See Solution

I am taking that opportunity to wish you a very happy new year... with plenty of profitable trade operations to come. I also want to thank many of you for your encouragements and suggestions, since the initial release a little bit more than two years ago for the Mac version, one year for the mobile versions. You’ve helped make these Apps better and stronger.... and, mid-December, the number of customers using these Apps has exceeded 2000...

Unfortunately, the year is starting on the wrong foot as you might have noticed
Yahoo historical servers are down, making it impossible to add new stocks using Yahoo as a provider. I am assuming this is just a very significant maintenance operation and the service will soon resume.
As we are on the internet providers subject,
Quandl experienced a major system failure on December 12 and were shutdown for over a week. They have resumed their operation and are progressively updating their data sets. They’re not there yet, the futures, noticeably, still show data gaps between December 12 and 26. They are obviously working hard on the issue and, on the long run, they have my vote...

In the next three months, the priority is a
major update of the Mac versions. There will be some spectacular performance improvements. One of the goals is to provide users with a very similar experience independently of the number of stocks. I am testing it with over 8000 stocks in the data base. This release will also include the possibility to easily create an unlimited number of mobile averages, either simple, exponential of weighted.... a long overdue enhancement.

For the iPad and the iPhone, there will be, shortly, a minor release, just to make the iCloud syncing compatible with the future Mac release. A little bit later, a major release, with the same “spectacular” performance improvement goal....

Flash 5 (December 15th, 2013)

The version 1.50 has been released.

The objectives of this release are:

Internet Providers:
  • Stocks can now be searched within Quandl. Remember, though, you have to register (free) in the Quandl web site. The search is not yet exhaustive but already includes 65000 symbols. As a reference, Yahoo covers a bit over 40000 symbols. Tip: For commodities, search OFDP.
  • Added a new local provider (India_NSE) to cover the NSE market. Data are directly extracted from NSE.

User Interface:
  • Significantly improved pinch and two fingers pane gestures
  • Added preferences to control all the fonts on the chart
  • Added last values within the scale of values for both chart and indicators (see preferences gridlines if you don’t like this).
  • A button appears in lieu of the logo, mid-screen, if you’re not looking at the most recent data.
  • Added a preference, intraday to select a different set of periods

New Features:
  • Added volume as an overlay. In effect, this frees up one indicator for an additional oscillator.
  • Added Squeeze overlay to be used with Heikin-Ashi representation (google Tim Haddock - Day trading with Heikin-Ashi Charts to know more)
  • Added a preference to select either Wilder original RSI formula or Cutler variation (more volatile)
  • Added support for Bitcoin. Bitcoin can be used as a trading currency, or as the program default.
  • Added “WeightedAverage” as a new custom indicator instruction, giving you the choice, for your scripts between “avg” (simple), “expAvg” (exponential), or the new weighted version.

Bugs Correction:
  • Several bugs,corrected.

Flash 4 (November 13th, 2013)

The version 2.40 has been released.

The first objective of this release is user interface improvement:
  • Stock screening can now be done on daily or weekly data. To that effect, a D/W switch has been added in the top right corner of the filtering screen.
  • If you “Press and Hold” anywhere on the graph, you’ll see a small window popping up with the current candle detail (high, low, open, close). To make it disappear, double tap anywhere on the graph.
  • The names of overlays and indicators curves will now appear when the crosshair is getting in close proximity of one of them. Note, in order to avoid deleting any critical changes you might have made to pre-loaded scripts, the update will not add names to custom indicators you might have edited. To add a name, go to the custom indicator screen, select the indicator you want to modify, press the edit button 704-compose. You’ll see new fields to enter names. This is optional.

The second objective is to correct two bugs linked to Quandl internet provider. The most important is the case where the App crashes after displaying a “Quandl Daily Hits Limit Exceeded”. When registered, Quandl has a 500/day hits limit. However, if you open the Quandl support page, you’ll see this message from Quandl founder: “
Users can request higher thresholds by contacting me No request is refused. We just like to know the people who are making heavy use of the API”.

Flash 3 (October 14th, 2013)

The version 1.30 has been released.

The first objective of this release is bugs correction. Among them:
  • Portfolio selection menu not working
  • OHLC representation with Open and Close ticks wrongly positioned
  • Trade flags not pointing exactly to the trade open or close value

The second objective is a eerie of minor improvements. Among them:
  • Introduction of new indicator measuring the statistical correlation of two entities, a stock and an index for instance. This is both to answer numerous demands for this kind of indicators, and to show what you can do with custom indicators. Note the pre-loaded indicator measure correlation to the DAX, but you can change the reference by changing the first line of the script getQuotes(^GDAXI) by whatever code is appropriate for you. You can, also, duplicate the indicator with multiple comparisons. Do not forget to press the “Compile” button after the change.
  • Ichimoku: The lagging line thickness can now be adjusted in the preferences
  • Lines and Comments: You can now adjust the time, in second, by default 0.5, before the context menu open.
  • For customers trading the NSE Indian market, partial workaround around Yahoo India problems. You should now get intraday updates and charts when Yahoo uses conventional codes. When Yahoo uses codes not recognized by NSE, like TATAMOTOR instead of TATAMOTORS, use Quandl with codes like NSE/TATAMOTORS.

Flash 2 (September 23rd, 2013)

The version 1.20 has been released. This is another major version.,

The first objective, dictating the timing, is iOS7. The App is now ready for iOS7, and fully embraces the spirit of it. For that reason, as soon as you upgrade to iOS7, you’ll see a very different look, no more buttons (I could not resist keeping a few), discrete controls, all about transparency.

The second objective is in regard with free
internet providers. On the downside, some of you have noticed MSN is no longer responding, they have changed their protocol... without documenting the new one... If I can’t find a solution soon, I’ll have to assume it is intentional and remove them.
On the bright side, I have added Quandl. Quandl is an open collaborative effort with millions of data sets from hundreds of sources. You have to do a bit of research but it’s worth it. For example, code for Apple is GOOG/NASDAQ_AAPL, code for Gold is OFDP/GOLD_2, code for the Dow Jones is BCB/UDJIAD1, etc... Note Quandl covers many other things beyond stocks like real estate data (
ZILLOW/COUNTY_ALLHOMES_LOSANGELESCA for the average housing price in L.A.), crime trends, or even UFO sightings (NUFORC/SIGHTINGS).

Important: Registration is free BUT you have to register before using them. Once registered, go to your account profile, API tab. You’ll see a 20 characters authentification token. Enter that token in Mastock, Preferences, Internet page.

The third objective is implementation of a few of your suggestions, for instance:
  • Ability to add lines, fibonacci, circles... for intraday charts
  • Kagi, Renko, 3Line, P&F... added zoom and ability to select a different stock without coming back to the main screen.
  • Added number of bars preference to the Volume per Price indicator
  • Keep two indicators in landscape mode

Also, a few bugs correction, like Preferences Colors, Intraday access for Singapore, Sao Paulo, Copenhagen and Vienna exchanges.

Known Bugs: From the time the App was submitted to Apple, to the time it was approved, two bugs have been uncovered. First Pivots Overlay always on, then the quote editor, in the data panel, with part of the screen disappearing under the status bar. A correction will be released shortly.

Flash 1 (July 16th, 2013)

The version 1.10 has been released, along with the 6.00 Mac and 2.00 iPad versions.

Those are very significant releases with huge improvements and new features.

Common to the three platforms:

Real Time Intraday: You can now get intraday data from free internet providers at no cost. All stock exchanges are not covered, but the most important ones, in America, Europe, China, India, Korea, Australia… are covered. South and Central America are not covered yet (working on it). For most of the exchanges, it’s real time data. Some like French and Australian markets, are delayed by 15 min (stocks exchanges policy). Note, when you launch the App, just after the update, a lot of work is taking place to modify the data structure and register each of your stocks for intraday. If you have a few hundred stocks, not a big issue; Some of you have thousands of stocks, update will take time, to the point where you might want to plan for an overnight update.

Flexible iCloud Synchronization: If you’ve 200 or 300 stocks on your Mac, the full automatic synchronization is still the right way to go. It’s a “no brainer”, once it’s setup, the system automatically maintains the same data on all devices. However, when you have thousands of stocks on your Mac, this is problematic. Thousands of stocks on a iPhone or iPad, are stretching those devices resource pretty thin. This alternate method allow you to keep your huge number of stocks on the Mac while working on a few (200 to 300 is ok) on iPhone or iPad. The synchro focus only on aligning Lines, Comments, Trades, Journal notes for the stocks common to two devices. It takes only a few second to sync when you decide to do so. The key issue with that methodology, however, is it requires human intervention, i.e. opportunity for error.

Supports and Resistances: Supports and Resistances determination was missing in Mastock. With 4 overlay indicators, based on the pivot points methodology and volume by price ranges, it’s now resolved.

Lebeau Chandeliers: We’re approaching the point where there might be too many indicators in Mastock, but Lebeau Chandeliers, because they provide a different perspective on trends assessment are a good complement to other overlays. Make sure you do some research on Chuck Lebeau’s work before using those two indicators.

Specific to the iPhone:

Multiple Delete: In the Stock Management Screen, a new “Multiple Delete” menu to quickly delete several stocks at once.

Lines: You now can add trend lines, fibonacci retracements, fans, fibonacci extensions, Gann grid, circles, rectangles, linear regression lines, etc… on the chart, and trend lines on indicators.

Comments: You can now add comments on the chart and indicators

Stocks Screening: Much much faster...

For the iPad release, without going into much detail, the key change (beyond the common points above) is the ability to display two periods of time side by side.
